  • Schematic illustrations of the alignment behavior induced by SWaP. Photopolymerization was conducted with a scanned UV slit light. Uniaxial molecular alignment was induced when the polymer concentration in the exposure area was high, while it was random when the polymer concentration was low.

  • The alignment of azobenzene molecule was induced by a new-alignment-patterning technique based on a scanning wave photopolymerization (SWaP) concept with unpolarized light. This finding indicates that SWaP could be employed as a novel and simple fabrication process for preparing a wide variety of highly functional optical devices requiring alignment control.

  • The molecular orientation of polymer-stabilized nematic liquid crystals (PSLCs) doped with oligothiophene can be easily manipulated using irradiation with linearly polarized light above a threshold intensity. The photoresponsive behavior depended on the initial molecular orientation, as controlled by the surface treatment of PSLC cells. The threshold light intensity for molecular reorientation was successfully reduced by 30% by optimizing the silane coupler concentration because of the decrease in surface anchoring. Thus, weak surface anchoring leads to a reduced threshold light intensity for molecular reorientation.

  • The properties of nano-crystalline materials depend heavily on their size, therefore, understanding early crystallization processes is crucial. Here, the relationship between phosphorescence and crystal structures of three crystallizing Au(I) complexes bearing n-alkyl chains of different lengths is studied.
