A zero external magnetic field quantum standard of resistance at the 10⁻⁹ level

Hall resistance quantization measurements in the quantum anomalous Hall effect regime on a device based on the magnetic topological insulator V-doped (Bi,Sb)₂Te₃ show that the system can provide a zero external magnetic field quantum standard of resistance.

Interacting topological edge channels

Little is known about how edge states in topological materials interact with each other. Here, a quantum spin Hall insulator is used to show that when edge states are brought close together, additional gaps appear in the spectrum.

Evidence for the ballistic intrinsic spin Hall effect in HgTe nanostructures

Non-local transport measurements on mercury telluride quantum wells show clear signatures of the ballistic spin Hall effect. The ballistic nature of the experiment allows the observed effect to be interpreted as a direct consequence of the band structure of these semiconductor nanostructures, rather that being caused by impurity scattering.

Single valley Dirac fermions in zero-gap HgTe quantum wells

Most of the notable properties of graphene are a result of the cone-like nature of the points in its electronic structure where its conduction and valance bands meet. Similar structures arise in 2D HgTe quantum wells, but without the spin- and valley-degeneracy of graphene; their properties are also likely to be easier to control.

A material weakly linking two superconductors may itself exhibit superconductivity whilst its material properties strongly influence the nature of the supercurrent. Here, the authors identify a supercurrent with p-wave symmetry in such a Josephson junction made of topologically non-trivial material.

Optimal control of vortex-core polarity by resonant microwave pulses

In magnetic nanostructures, the core of a vortex points either up or down, and the polarity can be reversed by alternating-field pulses. An experiment now demonstrates deterministic and coherent control of vortex-core polarity using sequences of resonant microwave pulses and highlights routes to optimizing the technique, which might find application in magnetic-storage devices.
