Sensitivity of SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.7 to mRNA vaccine-elicited antibodies

Sera from vaccinated individuals and some monoclonal antibodies show a modest reduction in neutralizing activity against the B.1.1.7 variant of SARS-CoV-2; but the E484K substitution leads to a considerable loss of neutralizing activity.

Genomics of the Argentinian cholera epidemic elucidate the contrasting dynamics of epidemic and endemic Vibrio cholerae

Pandemic cholera was reintroduced to Argentina in 1992, leading to epidemic spread. Here, the authors use whole genome sequencing to show how, over 6 years, epidemic cholera was caused by invariant 7PET lineage Vibrio cholerae, against a background of sporadic disease caused by diverse local strains.

Structure and insights into the function of a Ca²⁺-activated Cl⁻ channel

The X-ray crystal structure of a eukaryotic Ca²⁺-activated chloride channel, BEST1, and its function in liposomes are described; the structure shows that Ca²⁺ binds to the cytosolic region of this pentameric channel and reveals that the pore is approximately 95 Å long with at least 15 distinct anion-binding sites.

Vaccination is effective in protecting from COVID-19. Here the authors report immune responses and breakthrough infections in twice-vaccinated patients receiving anti-TNF treatments for inflammatory bowel disease, and find dampened vaccine responses that implicate the need of adapted vaccination schedules for these patients.
