  • Existing datasets of nitrogen (N) balance in agriculture are often discrepant. Comparing 13 of them regarding five metrics (fertilizer application, manure application, biological N fixation, atmospheric deposition, and N harvested as crop products) over 1961–2015 reveals why. Recommendations for improving N quantification and an N budget benchmark dataset are also proposed.

  • The sensitivity of the terrestrial biosphere to changes in climate constitutes a feedback mechanism with the potential to accentuate global warming. Process-based modelling experiments now indicate that under a business-as-usual emissions scenario the biosphere on land is expected to be an increasingly positive feedback to anthropogenic climate change, potentially amplifying equilibrium climate sensitivity by 22–27%.

  • From research on agricultural systems in temperate regions, it is known that use of nitrogen fertilizers and animal manure results in release of nitrous (N2O) and nitric (NO) oxides to the atmosphere. The reason for caring about this phenomenon is the effect these gases may have on both global warming and atmospheric chemistry. From studies in the tropics, it now seems that releases of (N2O) and NO are much higher from tropical agricultural systems. Given the projected large increase in use of nitrogen fertilizer in such areas in the coming years, that conclusion warrants further attention.
