Selective amino acid receptors that operate in aqueous media are of interest for potential diagnostic and sensing applications. Here, the authors report glucose-derived photoswitchable receptors based on a tetra-ortho-fluoroazobenzene unit for light-controlled binding of amino acid esters in water.
