Activation of alcohols as sulfonium salts in the photocatalytic hetero-difunctionalization of alkenes

1,2-Diols and 1,2-amino alcohols are widely found in bioactive compounds. Now it has been shown that alcohols can be converted, via alkoxy sulfonium salts, to alkoxy radicals that add to alkenes to give 1,2-diol and 1,2-amino-alcohol derivatives. The photocatalytic method can be run on a kilogram scale using a photoflow system.

The blue hue of einsteinium

A complex containing the unstable isotope ²⁵⁴Es has been synthesized on a nanogram scale. Analysis of the fundamental bonding and spectroscopic characteristics of this einsteinium compound shows a blue shift of Es(iii) luminescence upon complexation, and the ligand serves as an antenna to sensitize the excited state.

The structure of red phosphorous remains poorly elucidated. Here, the authors report the adsorption and photopolymerization of P₄ encapsulated in a metal-organic framework to obtain a double-helical chain composite comprising of [P₈] units in the porous material.

Direct photo-oxidation of methane to methanol over a mono-iron hydroxyl site

The partial oxidation of CH₄ to CH₃OH is challenging to perform in artificial systems due to ready over-oxidation to CO and CO₂. Here by confining mono-iron hydroxyl sites in a metal–organic framework, photo-oxidation of CH₄ to CH₃OH is achieved with high selectivity and time yield.
