Selective and energy-efficient electrosynthesis of ethylene from CO₂ by tuning the valence of Cu catalysts through aryl diazonium functionalization

Achieving high selectivity towards the formation of a single type of multi-carbon product from CO₂ electroreduction is difficult. Here Wu and colleagues show that the valence state of Cu can be tuned by functionalization of the catalyst surface with organic salts, boosting selectivity towards ethylene.

High-surface-area functionalized nanolaminated membranes for energy-efficient nanofiltration and desalination in forward osmosis

One of the problems of water-treatment membranes based on two-dimensional materials is that they tend to swell once in operation in water. A new strategy is presented for the preparation of non-swelling, covalently functionalized molybdenum disulfide membranes with tunable interlayer space and cohesion energy of the laminates.

Unlocking direct CO₂ electrolysis to C₃ products via electrolyte supersaturation

Direct CO₂ electroreduction on Cu-based catalysts has been used to produce C₂ products but yields of C₃ products have remained low. Here a CO₂ supersaturation strategy is used to promote electrodeposition of a highly alloyed CuAg electrode and its subsequent selectivity towards 2-propanol.
