Self-amplified photo-induced gap quenching in a correlated electron material

The non-equilibrium dynamics of correlated electron materials are still poorly understood. Here, the authors use time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to show that carrier multiplication is important in initial non-equilibrium dynamics of 1T-TiSe₂and depends on the size of the energy gap.

Revealing the dark side of a bright exciton–polariton condensate

Exciton–polaritons are bosonic quasi-particles resulting from strong coupling of excitons and photons but so far only their photon component had been resolved. Here, Menard et al. monitor the intra-excitonic transitions and study how a reservoir of optically dark excitons forms and feeds the degenerate state.

Non-thermal separation of electronic and structural orders in a persisting charge density wave

The electronic and structural components of charge density waves occurring in layered transition metal dichalcogenides are known to be interdependent, yet have only been probed in separate measurements. Now, a broadband terahertz spectroscopy approach that monitors the evolution of these two order parameters simultaneously is demonstrated.

Ultrafast transient generation of spin-density-wave order in the normal state of BaFe₂As₂ driven by coherent lattice vibrations

Ultrafast and intense optical pulses have been used to study spin-density-waves in pnictide compounds, which are known to exhibit unconventional superconductivity. The results show that the magnetic order follows lattice motion, which suggests that a spin–phonon coupling may play an important role in the formation of spin-density-waves and superconductivity.

Nonequilibrium charge-density-wave order beyond the thermal limit

Photo-induced phase transitions triggered by an ultrafast excitation cannot be described within the quasi-equilibrium framework. Here, using time-resolved experimental probes, the authors report a transient charge-density-wave order in TbTe₃ and describe it using a model with a non-equilibrium transition temperature.
