4(1H)-Quinolones are widely present in human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa with large structural and functional diversities, however, only limited congeners have been unambiguously identified so far. Here, the authors report hydroxy-2-alkylquinolone congeners from the strain P. aeruginosa by biosynthetic analysis as well as total synthesis, and reveal their function as cytokine IL-8 inducers.
