Topological transition of fluid lipid membranes, such as fission and fusion, is one of the fundamental processes for cell life. Bottacchiari and colleagues propose a free energy formulation for fission and fusion of large unilamellar vesicles, and validate it by comparing the obtained activation energy and force fields with existing experimental works, providing insights into how proteins drive the full-scale topological changes.
