Striping of orbital-order with charge-disorder in optimally doped manganites

Manganite perovskites display the intriguing property of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR), but only at very specific doping values. Now, a detailed crystallographic analysis of a prototype system reveals a novel type of orbital ordering that coexists with charge-disorder stripes, occurring precisely at the doping value where CMR is maximised.

Recipes for improper ferroelectricity in molecular perovskites

In layered inorganic materials lattice distortions can couple to break inversion symmetry and drive improper ferroelectricity, but in perovskites, symmetry prohibits such an effect. Here, the authors use group-theoretical analysis to provide crystal engineering design principles for improper ferroelectricity in molecular perovskites.

Charge order and three-site distortions in the Verwey structure of magnetite

X-ray diffraction is used to show that the structural distortion of magnetite below 125 kelvin is to a first approximation caused by charge ordering of its constituent iron ions, but that the localized electrons are distributed over three iron sites to form ‘trimeron’ quasiparticles.

A half-metallic A- and B-site-ordered quadruple perovskite oxide CaCu₃Fe₂Re₂O₁₂ with large magnetization and a high transition temperature

There are only a few transition metal oxides whose conducting electrons show a strong spin polarization at sufficiently high temperatures for spin electronics applications. Here, the authors find that CaCu₃Fe₂Re₂O₁₂has such spin-polarized conducting electrons and is ferrimagnetic up to 560 K.

Targeting neuronal lysosomal dysfunction caused by β-glucocerebrosidase deficiency with an enzyme-based brain shuttle construct

Mutations in glucocerebrosidase (GCase) cause the lysosomal storage disorder Gaucher’s disease and are the most common risk factor for Parkinson’s disease. Using a fusion protein comprising GCase and a transferrin receptor antibody fragment, the authors show that the transferrin receptor pathway can be therapeutically exploited to both pass the blood-brain barrier and efficiently target lysosomal GCase deficiency.
