Environmental DNA provides higher resolution assessment of riverine biodiversity and ecosystem function via spatio-temporal nestedness and turnover partitioning

Mathew Seymour et al. compare eDNA with traditional biodiversity metrics to assess the functional diversity of a river basin in Wales over space and time and variable land use. Their results show that eDNA can generate greater biodiversity resolution and reliably detect spatio-temporal changes in community and functional diversity.

An integrated spatio-temporal view of riverine biodiversity using environmental DNA metabarcoding

Using intensive eDNA sampling in space and time across five rivers in Europe and North America, this study shows that eDNA gives relevant information on freshwater diversity and ecology across broad taxonomic groups, and with limited downstream transport. The findings demonstrate that eDNA is vital for freshwater biodiversity monitoring in a time of anthropogenic change.

Acidity promotes degradation of multi-species environmental DNA in lotic mesocosms

Mathew Seymour et al. investigate the persistence of environmental DNA (eDNA) in river systems in environments of varying pH. Using four sets of upland stream mesocosms, they find that eDNA degrades to non-detectable levels within two days and this degradation is accelerated in acidic environments.

Annual time-series analysis of aqueous eDNA reveals ecologically relevant dynamics of lake ecosystem biodiversity

DNA from macrobial taxa can be extracted from environmental samples, including water, and be used to assess biodiversity in the region. Here, Bista and colleagues show that temporal shifts in the biodiversity of a lake invertebrate community can be detected by analysis of environmental DNA (eDNA).

Dimethyl fumarate in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 (RECOVERY): a randomised, controlled, open-label, platform trial

Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is an anti-inflammatory drug proposed as a treatment for COVID19. Here the results are reported from a randomised trial testing DMF treatment in 713 patients hospitalised with COVID-19. DMF was not associated with any improvement in day 5 outcomes.

Antibody decay, T cell immunity and breakthrough infections following two SARS-CoV-2 vaccine doses in inflammatory bowel disease patients treated with infliximab and vedolizumab

Vaccination is effective in protecting from COVID-19. Here the authors report immune responses and breakthrough infections in twice-vaccinated patients receiving anti-TNF treatments for inflammatory bowel disease, and find dampened vaccine responses that implicate the need of adapted vaccination schedules for these patients.

Species richness was found to increase temporal stability but decrease resistance to warming in an experiment involving 690 micro-ecosystems consisting of 1 to 6 species of bacterivorous ciliates that were sampled over 40 days.
