  • The lipid kinase phosphatidylinositol-4-OH kinase (PI(4)K) is identified as a target of the imidazopyrazines, a new antimalarial compound class that can inhibit several Plasmodium species at each stage of the parasite life cycle; the imidazopyrazines exert their inhibitory action by interacting with the ATP-binding pocket of PI(4)K.

  • Toll-like receptor TLR5 recognizes a domain, D1, that is present in flagellins of several pathogenic bacteria but not in Helicobacter pylori. Here, the authors show that TLR5 can be activated independently of flagellin by a component of the H. pylori type IV secretion system that contains a D1-like motif.

  • The millimetre image of the Centaurus A nucleus by the Event Horizon Telescope reveals a highly collimated, asymmetrically edge-brightened jet. The source’s event horizon shadow should be visible at terahertz frequencies, consistent with the universal scale invariance of black holes.
