Examining the surface evolution of LaTiO_xN_y an oxynitride solar water splitting photocatalyst

While solar-driven water splitting may afford a renewable means to harvest energy, it is essential to understand how photocatalysts transform during catalysis. Here, authors study LaTiO_xN_y films by surface-sensitive techniques before and after photoelectrochemical water splitting.

Revealing the role of lattice distortions in the hydrogen-induced metal-insulator transition of SmNiO₃

Proton doping can induce metal-insulator transitions in rare-earth nickelates, demonstrating the complex interplay between dopants and electronic degrees of freedom. Chen et al. use results on strained films to argue that local proton-induced lattice distortions strongly influence the transition.

Injecting solid particles into the stratosphere could mitigate global warming but currently entails great uncertainties

The Meissner effect in a strongly underdoped cuprate above its critical temperature

In the pseudogap state of cuprates, although diamagnetic signals have been detected, a Meissner effect has never been observed. Morenzoni and colleagues probe the local diamagnetic response in the normal state of an underdoped layer showing that a 'barrier' layer exhibits a Meissner effect.
