  • Here, the authors show that SARS-CoV-2 infection causes gut microbiome dysbiosis and gut epithelial cell alterations in a mouse model, and correlate dysbiosis observed in COVID-19 patients with blood stream infections, matching reads of bacterial sequences from stool samples to organisms found in the blood.

  • Engineered T cells are used for tumour immunotherapy but can have side effects and need multiple treatment rounds. Here during expansion of T cells from patients, the authors use an inhibitor of the epigenetic regulator G9a/GLP and show that this increases T cell cytotoxic function and tumour reduction in vitro and in vivo respectively.

  • A GWAS of multi- and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis using 6,465 Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolates from more than 30 countries identifies novel mutations associated with resistance. The capacity to detect resistance in particular to ethionamide, pyrazinamide, capreomycin, cycloserine and paraaminosalicylic acid was enhanced by inclusion of insertions and deletions.

  • It is unclear how specific signalling pathways are coordinated to generate pathologically activated cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs). Here, Ferrari et al show that stromal expression of Dickkopf-3 (DKK3) associates with aggressive tumours. DKK3 is a HSF-1 effector that activates β-catenin and YAP/TAZ, and DKK3-driven YAP/TAZ activation regulates the pro-tumorigenic behaviour of CAFs.
