  • Cei and colleagues used a model train to transport rats forward or backward on a circular track while the animals walked on a miniature treadmill. The authors found that the firing fields of hippocampal place cells remained stable across travel directions and that, when the train transported the rat backward, theta sequences of hippocampal cell assemblies and theta phase precession still represented the trajectory and the distance traveled through place fields.

  • Sharp wave-ripple (SPW-R) complexes during sleep or rest have yet to be causally linked to memory consolidation. Here, the authors show that suppressing hippocampal SPW-Rs during post-training sleep in rats impairs the consolidation of a hippocampus-dependent spatial memory task.

  • The authors show that artificially enhancing the temporal coordination between hippocampal sharp wave-ripples and cortical delta waves and spindles leads to the reorganization of cortical networks, an increase in their responsivity during recall, and memory consolidation. The study provides causal evidence for the role of hippocampo-cortical interactions during sleep in memory consolidation.
