Midbrain dopaminergic neuron activity is associated with reward signaling and aversive stimuli. Using genetic models in which excitatory response of dopaminergic neurons are reduced, the authors find that the imbalance of dopaminergic neuronal response following aversive stimuli is manifested in generalized anxiety.
