CurT/CURT1 proteins are involved in cell and chloroplast division coordination of cyanobacteria and green algae

CURT1/CurT proteins, known for shaping thylakoid membranes in photosynthetic organisms, play a newly found role in coordinating cell division and symmetry. Being shared in cyanobacteria and green algae this role is likely phylogenetically ancient.

An epigenetic gene silencing pathway selectively acting on transgenic DNA in the green alga Chlamydomonas

Strong transgene suppression has been observed in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, but the underlying mechanism is unknown. Here, the authors identify a sirtuin-type histone deacetylase that selectively acts on transgenic DNA to repress gene expression by assembling a repressive chromatin structure composed of deacetylated histones.

Identification of the transporter responsible for sucrose accumulation in sugar beet taproots

Sugar beet provides around one third of the sugar consumed worldwide and serves as a significant source of bioenergy. A series of laboratory experiments suggests that the transporter BvTST2.1 is responsible for sucrose uptake in the vacuoles of sugar beet taproots.
