Thibaut Pralon et al. show that a predicted atypical kinase located in plastoglobules (PGR6) is necessary for maintaining the pool of photoactive plastoquinone in the chloroplast. They find that the absence of this gene in mutant plants adversely affects photosynthetic efficiency.
