MSL10 is a high-sensitivity mechanosensor in the tactile sense of the Venus flytrap

The Venus flytrap, a carnivorous plant, catches prey by sensing touch. Here, the authors show that DmMSL10 functions as a high-sensitivity mechanosensor in sensory hairs, initiating long-range calcium and electrical signals required for trap closure.

Moss development: Starting BELL for embryos

Major life cycle transitions happen after changes in stem cells trigger new developmental programs. In moss, expression of the homeobox transcription factor BELL1 is sufficient to induce sporophyte stem cells from the gametophyte phase, without having to go through fertilization.

A Lin28 homologue reprograms differentiated cells to stem cells in the moss Physcomitrella patens

Land plants and metazoans are both able to reprogram differentiated cells to stem cells under certain circumstances. Here the authors show that the moss CSP1 protein, which shares conserved domains with the mammalian pluripotent stem cell factor Lin28, promotes reprogramming of leaf cells to apical stem cells.

Calcium-mediated rapid movements defend against herbivorous insects in Mimosa pudica

Mimosa pudica moves its leaves within seconds of being touched or wounded. Here the authors show that such movements are triggered by rapid changes in Ca²⁺ and action and variation potentials and provide evidence that rapid movements help protect the plant from insect attacks.

Mechanism of microtubule array expansion in the cytokinetic phragmoplast

The Gibberellin perception system evolved to regulate a pre-existing GAMYB-mediated system during land plant evolution

Plant male reproduction is controlled by gibberellin signalling via the transcription factor GAMYB. Here, deletion of GAMYB in a moss species lacking a gibberellin signalling pathway gives rise to abnormal spores, suggesting that primitive plants used GAMYB for the control of sexual organ development.

Comparative genome sequencing reveals genomic signature of extreme desiccation tolerance in the anhydrobiotic midge

The African chironomid midge, Polypedilum vanderplanki, is able to withstand extreme desiccation. Here the authors sequence the genomes of a desiccation-tolerant and desiccation-sensitive species of chironomid midge and pinpoint genes that may have a role in conferring resistance to desiccation.
