  • Functional-group transfer strategies using surrogates to avoid handling hazardous reagents are often limited to monofunctionalization reactions. Now, an operationally simple and mechanistically distinct photocatalytic transfer strategy for vicinal dihalogenation of carbon–carbon multiple bonds, such as in alkenes, alkynes and allenes, using readily synthesized oxime-based dihalogen surrogates is reported.

  • Acyl radicals represent a reactive species that allow for aldehyde subunits to be nucleophilic instead of their typical electrophilic behavior; however, these species are difficult to access in mild conditions.   • The controlled functionalization of multihydrosilanes is challenging. Now, using a hydrogen-atom-transfer photocatalyst based on neutral eosin Y, a method for the diverse functionalization of hydrosilanes has been developed, enabling the stepwise on-demand decoration of silicon atoms. This approach is distinguished by its atom-, step-, redox- and catalyst-economy, metal-free nature, its versatility (>150 examples), modularity, selectivity and scalability.

  • NORAD, a non-coding RNA activated by DNA damage, is highly expressed in osteosarcoma cells and tissue. The authors show that extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) deliver NORAD to osteosarcoma cells to regulate the miR-30c-5p/ Krueppel-like factor 10 axis, thereby accelerating the progression and metastasis of osteosarcoma.
