The heterogenous nature of rheumatoid arthritis renders the prediction of responsiveness to biological treatments difficult. The cytokine IL-6 controls the survival, proliferation and effector functions of lymphocytes. Jones and colleagues show that activation of CD4⁺ T cells leads to suppression of STAT1 activation by tyrosine phosphatases and changes the effector characteristics of memory CD4⁺ T cells in response to IL-6.
