Brockarchaeota, a novel archaeal phylum with unique and versatile carbon cycling pathways

Geothermal environments are hotspots for carbon cycling. Here, De Anda et al. reconstruct archaeal genomes from terrestrial and deep-sea geothermal sediments, and propose the classification of these microbes as a new phylum, ‘Brockarchaeota’, with unique metabolic capabilities including non-methanogenic anaerobic methylotrophy.

DPANN archaea are a group of microorganisms that require direct cell contact with other archaeal host species for growth. Here, Hamm et al. show that a DPANN archaeon engages in parasitic interactions with its host leading to host cell lysis, thus providing experimental evidence of a predatory-like lifestyle for an archaeon.

The microbiota of the rhizosphere (roots) and phyllosphere (leaves) of healthy plants consist of taxonomically structured bacterial communities; here the majority of species representing the main bacterial phyla from these two organs were isolated and genomes of about 400 representative bacteria were sequenced; the resources of cultured bacteria, corresponding genomes and a gnotobiotic plant system enabled an examination of the taxonomic overlap and functional specialization between the rhizosphere and phyllosphere bacterial microbiota.
