Liver-derived Neuregulin1α stimulates compensatory pancreatic β cell hyperplasia in insulin resistance

Pancreatic islet hyperplasia is an adaptive response to increased systemic insulin demand. Here the authors report that the liver-derived secretory protein Neuregulin1α promotes compensatory beta-cell hyperplasia and insulin secretion during an obesogenic diet in mice.

HIF-1α-PDK1 axis-induced active glycolysis plays an essential role in macrophage migratory capacity

Migration to the inflamed tissue demands energy production in an increasingly hypoxic environment. Here the authors show that during migration, HIF1α-induced PDK1 uniquely adapts macrophage metabolism to mild hypoxia by promoting glycolysis while preserving cytochrome c oxidase activity.

Epithelial cells remove precancerous cells by cell competition via MHC class I–LILRB3 interaction

Epithelial cells can use an immune-like mechanism to extrude neighboring precancerous cells; however, the recognition and control mechanisms of this process are unclear. Maruyama and colleagues demonstrate that LILRB3 on normal epithelial cells recognizes elevated MHC class I on transformed cells and triggers the extrusion process.
