Non-equilibrium 8π Josephson effect in atomic Kitaev wires

Detecting Majorana quasi-particles requires unambiguous and experimentally accessible fingerprints. Here, the authors demonstrate the existence of a 8π-periodic fractional Josephson effect in a Kitaev wire as a signature for Majorana quasi-particles, and propose a cold atom experiment for its detection.

Quantum machine learning with Adaptive Boson Sampling via post-selection

Extending quantum photonics’ capabilities from simple linear-optics-based schemes to universal quantum computing presents several challenges, but intermediate regimes with some degree of adaptivity might already bring practical advantages. Here, the authors experimentally emulate an adaptive Boson Sampling scheme using post-selection, and apply it to a data classification task.

A single microwave photon in a superposition of two states of different frequency is now demonstrated using a superconducting quantum interference device to mediate the coupling between two harmonics of a resonator. Experimental three-photon quantum nonlocality under strict locality conditions

Violation of the classical bound of the three-particle Mermin inequality by nine standard deviations is experimentally demonstrated by closing both the locality and freedom-of-choice loopholes; only the fair-sampling assumption is required. To achieve this, a light source for producing entangled multiphoton states and measurement technologies for precise timing and efficient detection were developed.

BugSplit enables genome-resolved metagenomics through highly accurate taxonomic binning of metagenomic assemblies

A new computational method, BugSplit, teases out individual species’ genomes from metagenomic samples. The authors show that BugSplit is able to identify the presence of a novel coronavirus in COVID-19 patients using a database from 2019 predating the pandemic and can separate host and pathogen sequences in other clinical samples with much higher specificity and accuracy than competing tools.

Functional differences between TSHR alleles associate with variation in spawning season in Atlantic herring

Junfeng Chen et al. examine potential functional consequences of reproduction timing-associated TSHR alleles segregating in Atlantic herring. By comparing fish that spawn during the spring to those that spawn in the autumn, they find that the spring-allele is correlated with enhanced cAMP signaling and that both coding and non-coding variants in the TSHR locus contribute to seasonal reproduction.
