Locating the atoms at the hard-soft interface of gold nanoparticles

Surface controls nanocrystal growth, but atomic-scale hard-soft interfaces are hard to measure. Here, the authors develop electron microscopy methods to reveal the position of metal adatoms and surfactant counterions on gold nanocuboid surfaces.

Direct observation of chemical reactions on single gold nanocrystals using surface plasmon spectroscopy

Current techniques to determine reaction rates on the nanoscale measure ensemble averages, making it difficult to relate the catalytic activity of nanoparticles to their morphology. Researchers have now used surface plasmon spectroscopy to observe the kinetics of a redox reaction catalysed by a gold nanoparticle and also the atomic deposition of gold onto a nanocrystal.

Magneto-optical properties of trions in non-blinking charged nanocrystals reveal an acoustic phonon bottleneck

Colloidal quantum dots may be used in a variety of emerging technologies, particularly if charged states can be stabilized. Here, cadmium selenide core-shell nanocrystals are engineered for trion emission at low temperatures, and their finite size introduces an acoustic phonon bottleneck, inhibiting spin relaxation.

Vaccination is effective in protecting from COVID-19. Plasmonic polymer nanocomposites

A responsive material in the form of a polymer or hydrogel can be combined with a signal transduction element in the form of plasmonic particles, resulting in hybrid plasmonic polymer nanocomposites. In this Review, the fabrication and applications of such nanocomposites are discussed. The applications described focus on optical data storage, sensing and imaging and the use of photothermal gels for in vivo therapy.

Continental-scale temperature variability during the past two millennia

Temperature change over the past 2,000 years has shown pronounced regional variability. An assessment of all available continental temperature reconstructions shows a clear twentieth century warming trend, but no evidence of a coherent Little Ice Age or Medieval Warm Period.
