Dynamic spin filtering at the Co/Alq₃ interface mediated by weakly coupled second layer molecules

At the hybrid interface between an organic molecular layer and a metallic magnetic surface, spin-filtering effects may be exploited for the generation of spin polarization. Here, the authors demonstrate a dynamic spin-filtering effect across the Co/Alq₃ interface, mediated via a second Alq₃layer.

Spin-orbit coupling induced splitting of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states in antiferromagnetic dimers

The influence of spin-orbit coupling on the hybridization of Shiba states in dimers of magnetic atoms on superconducting surfaces remains unexplored. Here, the authors reveal a splitting of atomic Shiba orbitals due to spin-orbit coupling and broken inversion symmetry in antiferromagnetically coupled Mn dimers placed on a Nb(110) surface.

In coordination and organometallic chemistry, back-bonding between an electron-rich, typically mid- or low-oxidation-state d-block metal centre and a ligand with accepting π* orbitals is widespread. Now, such an interaction has been observed between unlikely partners—high-oxidation-state uranium(v) 5f¹ ion and the poor π-acceptor ligand dinitrogen—in a U(v)–bis(imido)–N₂ complex stabilized by a lithium counterion.

Electron spin resonance of single iron phthalocyanine molecules and role of their non-localized spins in magnetic interactions

Electron spin resonance spectroscopy has traditionally been used to study large ensembles of spins, but its combination with scanning tunnelling microscopy recently enabled measurements on single adatoms. Now, individual iron phthalocyanine complexes adsorbed on a surface have been probed. Their spin distribution partially extends on the phthalocyanine, leading to a strong geometry-dependent exchange coupling interaction.

The Lin28b–let-7–Hmga2 axis determines the higher self-renewal potential of fetal haematopoietic stem cells

Fetal haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) display higher self-renewal potential than their adult counterparts. Eaves and colleagues show that adult HSCs express lower levels of Lin28b and higher levels of let-7 miRNA. They demonstrate that Lin28 overexpression, as well as that of Hmga2 (a target of let-7), induces fetal properties in adult HSCs. Conversely, HMGA2 loss in fetal HSCs results in premature induction of adult HSC self-renewal properties.

Holt et al. describe an anti-HIV strategy in which human hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells are modified with zinc-finger nucleases to knock out the viral co-receptor CCR5. Transplantation of these cells into mice confers resistance to HIV, as shown by higher human T-cell counts and lower viral loads compared with animals that received unmodified cells.

Majorana bound states have possible application in future quantum computing devices but designing platforms where their signatures can be isolated and observed is challenging. Here, the authors report experimental and calculated data for the screening of proximitized superconducting and strongly spin-orbit-coupled heavy metal layers with atom-by-atom assembled chains of transition metal atoms with the aim of realizing large topological minigaps protecting Majorana edge modes.
