A theory, based on a detailed microscopic picture of waves scattering at the subwavelength holes, has been developed that reconciles various different opinions as it takes into account surface plasmon modes as well as other electromagnetic fields. The new model accurately predicts various features in the transmission spectra and may be used as a basis for the design of nano-optics devices.
