While non-caloric artificial sweeteners (NAS) are used as food additives, it’s unclear whether animals perceive NAS as positive or negative percept. Here, Musso and colleagues show in Drosophila that NAS is a negative percept, encoded in a new type of memory.

Glia fuel neurons with locally synthesized ketone bodies to sustain memory under starvation

In the Drosophila starved brain, memory formation undergoes adaptive plasticity. Silva et al. show that neurons in the olfactory memory centre of the starved fly are fuelled by glial-derived ketone bodies in order to sustain memory formation.
