μ-opioid receptor system mediates reward processing in humans

Evidence for two types of brown adipose tissue in humans

Brown fat is a thermogenically active organ that burns energy instead of storing it and has been the focus of intense research recently in the hopes of harnessing this activity to combat obesity. Sven Enerbäck and his colleagues now show that human neonates possess a classical form of this type of fat, suggesting hope that its expansion in adults may indeed be an avenue of therapy to treat obesity.

TGF-β2 is an exercise-induced adipokine that regulates glucose and fatty acid metabolism

Many beneficial effects of exercise are mediated by factors secreted from the exercising muscle, so-called myokines. Here, the authors identify what might be the first exercised-induced adipokine, TGF-β2, which is secreted from subcutaneous fat in response to exercise-induced increases in serum lactate levels and has beneficial metabolic effects in mice.

The importance of human brown adipose tissue volume

A new study investigates brown adipose tissue (BAT) volume in young, metabolically healthy adults. The focus is on the associations between BAT volume and BMI, waist circumference, whole-body adipose tissue mass, visceral adipose tissue mass and cold-induced BAT activity. Of note, the reported associations differed in men and women.
