Bose–Einstein condensation of light in a semiconductor quantum well microcavity

Photon Bose–Einstein condensation is observed in a semiconductor laser, where thermalization and condensation of photons occur using an InGaAs quantum well and an open microcavity. The distinction between regimes of photon Bose–Einstein condensation and conventional lasing are clearly identified.

Spectral interferometric microscopy reveals absorption by individual optical nanoantennas from extinction phase

Absorption by an optical nanoantenna determines its interaction strength with light, yet this quantity is hidden from conventional spectroscopy. Gennaro et al. now demonstrate a spectroscopic technique that reveals a nanoantenna’s absorption by recovering its amplitude and phase response.

Extending magnetic nanostructures into three dimensions offers a vast increase in potential functionalities, but this typically comes at the expense of ease of fabrication and measurement. Here, Dion et al. demonstrate an approach to creating three dimensional magnetic nanostructures while retaining easy fabrication and readout of established two dimensional approaches.

Ultrafast plasmonic nanowire lasers near the surface plasmon frequency

Electron scattering limits the optical excitations produced by metal-based lasers to femtosecond timescales. But sub-picosecond pulsing can be achieved in a plasmonic nanowire laser by operating near the surface plasmon frequency.

Metamaterials have a tremendous potential for applications from biophotonics to optical circuits, although progress has been hampered by intrinsic metal losses. A hybrid plasmonic waveguide for subwavelength confinement and long-range propagation

Xiang Zhang and colleagues from the University of California, Berkeley, propose a new approach for confining light on scales much smaller than the wavelength of light. Using hybrid waveguides that incorporate dielectric and plasmonic waveguiding techniques, they are able to confine surface plasmon polaritons very strongly over large distances. The advance could lead to truly nanoscale plasmonics and photonics.

Driven-dissipative non-equilibrium Bose–Einstein condensation of less than ten photons

Non-equilibrium Bose–Einstein condensation of 7 ± 2 photons is observed in a sculpted dye-filled microcavity. The small number of particles allows the authors to access and characterize the non-equilibrium dynamics of the bosonic modes.
