Iron oxide nanoclusters have high potential for high-density energy storage and spintronics microdevices, but systems that are both stable and display strong ferromagnetism remain challenging to obtain. Here, the authors study the gas phase collision reactions of the iron clusters Fen- (n = 7-31) and observe the stable, strongly ferromagnetic iron oxide cluster Fe17O10- featuring an accordion-like structure.
