Corals are under critical stress due to rising oceanic temperatures and eutrophication and while it has been hypothesized that microbial symbionts might help mitigate some of this damage, the mechanisms underlying coral resilience remain unknown. This study shows that hyper-efficient bacterial denirtrifier genus, Ruegeria, are abundant in high -nitrate waters and their close relationship with corals assists in coral survival.
