Perpendicular exchange bias in ferrimagnetic spin valves

Exchange bias is a technologically relevant effect that occurs when thin ferromagnetic films are placed in direct proximity to antiferromagnets. Raduet al. show that an exchange bias occurs at room temperature in ferrimagnetic trilayers, in which the magnetization is aligned perpendicular to the structures.

Tuning ultrafast demagnetization with ultrashort spin polarized currents in multi-sublattice ferrimagnets

Prior studies have pointed to the role of spin-polarized hot electrons in ultrafast demagnetization. Here, by combining time and element resolved X-ray magnetic circular dichroism with theoretical calculations, Gupta et al quantitatively resolve both the effect of spin polarization and the current densities in ultrashort hot electron pulses.

Interface-induced room-temperature multiferroicity in BaTiO₃

With only a few known useful room-temperature multiferroics, other ways of achieving materials showing magnetism as well as electrical polarization are sought. The discovery that the ferroelectric BaTiO₃ also shows magnetism at room temperature at the interface with iron or cobalt marks a new approach to achieving multiferroic properties.

Direct observation of Néel-type skyrmions and domain walls in a ferrimagnetic DyCo₃ thin film

Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures that have potential implications for spintronic devices but greater control over their stability and physical characteristics are first required. Here, the authors study the formation of skyrmions in ferrimagnetic thin films of DyCo₃ and using a combination of X-ray measurements determine them to be of the Néel type.
