Concerted localization-resets precede YAP-dependent transcription

The transcriptional regulator YAP shuttles rapidly between the cytoplasm and nucleus, but whether and how dynamics such as amplitude and frequency affect target gene transcription is unclear. Here, using live imaging of endogenous YAP and target-gene transcription, the authors show that YAP-dependent signalling is encoded through rapid and concerted changes in the nucleo-cytoplasmic distribution of YAP.

Satb1 integrates DNA binding site geometry and torsional stress to differentially target nucleosome-dense regions

Satb1 is a master regulator of multiple cellular processes. Here the authors find that Satb1 preferentially targets nucleosome dense regions and combinatorially uses multiple selection criteria including DNA torsion, flanking DNA shape, motif density and periodicity to streamline binding choices.

Chromosome-scale selective sweeps shape Caenorhabditis elegans genomic diversity

Leonid Kruglyak and colleagues report high-throughput selective sequencing of a worldwide collection of 200 wild C. elegans strains, providing a comprehensive characterization of genetic variation in this species. They find that chromosome-scale selective sweeps have acted to reduce genetic variation and shape the C. elegans population structure in recent history.
