Neural mechanisms underlying deep brain strokes are not fully understood. Here authors demonstrate that spreading depolarizations occur in the intact contralesional hippocampus during unilateral stroke. These spreading depolarizations are more common in female mice and allow preservation of hippocampus-dependent learning.
