  • Coherent conversion between optical and microwave photonics is needed for future quantum applications. Here, the authors combine thin-film lithium niobate and superconductor platforms as a hybrid electro-optic system to achieve high-efficiency frequency conversion between microwave and optical modes.

  • Single photon devices are needed for many future technologies, but resolving the color of single photons in a compact architecture is still a challenge. The authors present a broadband, chip-scale spectrometer for measuring single photon wavelengths from 600 to 2000 nm with no moving parts.

  • Developing planar phononic circuits analogous to photonic circuits are of interest to provide scalable advantages and complex manipulation of phonons. Here, the authors realize a phononic integrated circuit with a Gallium Nitride-on-sapphire platform, which provides strong confinement and control of phonons.

  • Up to 100 photons are resolved by a waveguide-integrated and hybrid spatiotemporal-multiplexed superconducting nanowire single-photon detector array. Using this detector array, photon statistical behaviour for a true thermal and a coherent light source is verified.

  • An optomechanical single-photon frequency shifter is demonstrated in integrated AlN waveguides. A frequency shift up to 150 GHz is achieved at telecom wavelength. The device shows near-unity efficiency and preserves the quantum coherence.

  • Superconducting electro-optic modulators for a cryogenic-to-room-temperature link are demonstrated. The record-low half-wave voltage of 42 mV is achieved on a 1-m-long modulator. By matching the velocity of microwave and optical signals, a 0.2-m-long modulator can achieve a 3 dB bandwidth of over 17 GHz.

  • Hybrid quantum systems would allow interfacing superconducting nodes with optical links. Here, the authors demonstrate an integrated platform where 10 GHz phonons are resonantly coupled with photons in a superconducting cavity and a nanophotonic cavity at the same time, allowing efficient mediation of bidirectional microwave-optical conversion.
