Insulating interlocked ferroelectric and structural antiphase domain walls in multiferroic YMnO₃

The ability to exert control over domains in multiferroic materials is important in terms of the potential use of these materials. In the multiferroic YMnO₃, structural considerations lead to an unusual cloverleaf pattern of ferroelectric domains, where the domain walls are electrically insulating.

Spontaneous decays of magneto-elastic excitations in non-collinear antiferromagnet (Y,Lu)MnO₃

The properties of magnetic, crystalline solids can be described in terms of quantum particles of spin-wave and lattice-vibration energy, known as magnons and phonons respectively. Here, the authors show that strong magnon-phonon coupling in a noncollinear antiferromagnet can create magnetoelastic excitations.

Charge-ordering cascade with spin–orbit Mott dimer states in metallic iridium ditelluride

The influence of spin–orbit coupling on itinerant electrons underlies the formation of spin–orbit Mott states. Here, the authors demonstrate a temperature-hysteretic cascade between charge-ordered phases stabilized by localized 5dspin–orbit Mott dimer states in metallic iridium ditelluride.

Spin texture induced by non-magnetic doping and spin dynamics in 2D triangular lattice antiferromagnet h-Y(Mn,Al)O₃

In geometrically frustrated magnets small perturbations, such as non-magnetic impurities, can significantly alter the ground state. Here, using inelastic neutron scattering, Park et al. explore such a situation in Al-doped h-YMnO3, where the Aluminum dopants induce an extended spin structure.

Infrared nano-spectroscopy of ferroelastic domain walls in hybrid improper ferroelectric Ca₃Ti₂O₇

Ferroic domain walls are nano-objects that are considered functional elements in future devices. Here, the authors study phonons across ferroelastic domain walls by synchrotron-based near-field infrared nano-spectroscopy and relate these changes to the order parameter which helps to understand domain wall dynamics.

Imaging antiferromagnetic antiphase domain boundaries using magnetic Bragg diffraction phase contrast

Imaging the antiferromagnetic (AFM) domains facilitates the understanding and design of AFM spintronics but is still challenging. Here the authors show an imaging approach for antiphase domains in AFM Fe₂Mo₃O₈ by resonantly scattered coherent soft X-rays, which is also applicable to collinear antiferromagnets.

The measurement of the total cross-section of proton–proton collisions is of fundamental importance for particle physics. Here, the first measurement of the inelastic cross-section is presented for proton–proton collisions at an energy of 7 teraelectronvolts using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider.

Whole-genome sequencing and comprehensive molecular profiling identify new driver mutations in gastric cancer

Suet Yi Leung, Mao Mao and colleagues report whole-genome sequencing of 100 gastric cancers and DNA copy number, gene expression and methylation profiling of these tumors. They identify new recurrently mutated genes and find mutation of RHOA in 14% of diffuse-type gastric cancers.
