Strain control of hybridization between dark and localized excitons in a 2D semiconductor

Mechanical strain is a powerful tuning knob for excitons in two-dimensional semiconductors. Here, the authors find that under the application of strain, dark and localized excitons in monolayer WSe₂ are brought into energetic resonance, forming a new hybrid state that inherits the properties of the constituent species.

Universal vibrational anharmonicity in carbyne-like materials

Carbyne consists of a linear chain of carbon atoms. Here the authors use Raman spectroscopy on confined carbyne chains to show that carbyne-like materials follow a universal trend of increasing vibrational anharmonicity with decreasing bond-length alteration.

Bulk-suppressed and surface-sensitive Raman scattering by transferable plasmonic membranes with irregular slot-shaped nanopores

Characterizing surfaces by Raman spectroscopy is limited by the competition of surface and bulk Raman responses. Here the authors use nanoporous plasmonic membranes to enhance surface Raman signals while suppressing bulk contributions.

Strain fingerprinting of exciton valley character in 2D semiconductors

The authors develop a nanomechanical straining technique to reveal previously inaccessible intervalley excitons in suspended WSe₂ and WS₂. They further unveil a mechanism that brightens the dark intervalley excitons through strain-controlled hybridization with intravalley excitons.

High antibody levels and reduced cellular response in children up to one year after SARS-CoV-2 infection

Severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection is different in adults and children which involves the immune response. Here using a parent and children cohort with 4 month and 12 month sampling times, the authors show enhanced levels and increased breadth of anti-spike antibody level over time but reduced specific T cell and B cell numbers in children.
