  • Widespread forest die-back due to the increasing frequency and intensity of drought in many parts of the planet is focusing attention on the mechanisms of tree drought resistance. This study provides direct experimental evidence that greater non-structural carbohydrate concentrations before drought help maintain hydraulic function and thereby prolong drought tolerance in seedlings of ten tropical tree species.

  • Rising CO2 levels have been thought to potentially increase plant growth due to improved fertilization, but such a general effect is spatially and temporally affected by precipitation. Grassland experiments show constraints and increases in the fertilization effect due to seasonal-based precipitation, inferring that any potential plant growth could be mitigated by natural rainfall changes.

  • Hechenleitner et al. describe two new titanosaurians and the finding of numerous accumulations of titanosaurian eggs in La Rioja, Argentina. This study suggests nesting site philopatry among Titanosauria and that this clade was spread throughout southern South America at the end of the Late Cretaceous.
