The intertwined electronic and geometric effects in heterogeneous catalysis have long hindered precise attribution of their individual roles. Here, the authors demonstrate a strategy to decouple electronic and geometric effects in Pd catalysts through thermally induced surface reconstruction, enabling selective alkyne hydrogenation.
