  • Iron-catalyzed C–C reductive coupling avoids sensitive reagents but struggles to build quaternary centers. Using phosphine-ligated Fe and carbonyl directing groups, this work enables tertiary–primary/secondary C(sp³) coupling under mild conditions.

  • Allenes are versatile substrates in synthetic chemistry. Now an iron catalyst enables unusual regioselectivity by mediating an electrophilicity reversal of allenes for stereoselective alkenylzincation reactions affording 1,4-diene zinc products.

  • While the counterion of a metal catalyst can influence the activity and selectivity of reactions, this phenomenon is rarely observed in carbonzincation reactions. Herein, the authors report increased catalytic efficiency in the iron-catalyzed alkylzincation of alkynes when the weakly coordinating bulky counterion tetrakis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)borate is added.

  • Stereospecific [1,3]-rearrangements are rarely reported method to efficiently build complex organic architectures. Here, the authors describe a metal-free intramolecular hydroalkoxylation/[1,3]-rearrangement sequence affording medium-sized lactams with wide scope, also in an asymmetric fashion.

  • Hydrosilylation of alkenes poses substantial challenges in terms of regioselectivity. Here, the authors report iron complexes with 1,10-phenantroline ligand scaffolds which  display benzylic selectivity in the hydrosilylation of internal alkenes and Markovnikov selectivity with terminal styrenes and 1,3-dienes.

  • Iron is an abundant, low cost and environmentally benign metal. Here, iron complexes are shown to be the most effective catalysts for asymmetric O–H insertion reactions. These results should encourage the use of iron, rather than more traditional precious metals, in the development of greener organometallic catalysts for asymmetric transformations.
