Imc is a midbrain inhibitory nucleus essential for stimulus selection across space. Here, the authors show in the barn owl that global inhibitory surrounds of Imc neurons are constructed within Imc, but their classical inhibitory surrounds are inherited from inputs.

The brain selects stimuli for preferential processing on the basis of both their physical salience and their relevance to behavior. Recording from the midbrain of the barn owl, the authors show that a single inhibitory circuit is critical for both physical salience-driven (exogenous) and internally driven (endogenous) control of stimulus selection.

Donut-like organization of inhibition underlies categorical neural responses in the midbrain

Decision making is facilitated by categorical neuronal responses, which robustly signal a winner despite input noise. In this study, the authors demonstrate that a donut-like inhibition motif effectively generates such categorical responses.

Stimulus-driven competition in a cholinergic midbrain nucleus

The mechanisms by which the brain selects a particular stimulus as the next target for gaze are only partially understood. A cholinergic nucleus in the owl's midbrain exhibits functional properties that suggest a role for it as a 'salience map' in facilitating bottom-up stimulus selection.
