  • Wang et al. identify the intragrain impurity nanoclusters of a metastable (FA,Cs)PbI₄ phase, arising from intragrain cation segregation, to be the performance-limiting defect structure in FA–Cs mixed-cation perovskites. An inner salt is introduced to mitigate these intragrain defects, enabling n-i-p perovskite solar cells with efficiency of 26.03%.

  • The detrimental effects of intragrain impurity nanoclusters on the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells remain unexplored. Here, the authors study the intragrain impurity annihilation by in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy and adopt a laser stimulus to heal such impurity.

  • A method mediated by [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) is developed to synthesize a uniform, purer-phase 2D perovskite capping layer on 3D perovskite films. The PCBM interlayer mediates the reaction of the 2D passivator with the 3D perovskite and prevents grain-boundary etching, enhancing solar cell efficiency and stability.

  • Integrating heterogeneous single atom nanozyme (SAzyme) configurations and homogeneous enzyme-like mechanism is promising for optimizing SAzymes but elusive. Here the authors address this issue by developing a spatial engineering strategy to fabricate dual-sites SAzymes incorporating single atom Fe active centers (Fe–N4) and Cu atomic sites (Cu–N4) in a vertically stacked Fe–N4 and Cu–N4 geometry.

  • Many of the most sensitive X-ray detectors are based on toxic elements such as lead, limiting their safe applications. Here, the authors report the realization of sensitive X-ray detectors based on solution-grown thick BiI/BiI3/BiI van der Waals heterostructures, showing a detection limit down to 34 nGy s−1 and high stability.

  • Photocatalytic overall water splitting on particulate systems represents a possibility for clean energy storage, yet efficiencies for the process are typically low. Here, highly concentrated saltwater is used to polarize photoexcited N-doped TiO2, resulting in enhanced charge separation and a solar-to-hydrogen efficiency approaching 20%.

  • Tianzhen Zhang, Xiongming Du and colleagues report whole-genome resequencing of 318 upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) accessions. They carried out genome-wide association analyses to identify loci associated with fiber quality, lint yield and resistance to Verticillium wilt, and identify two ethylene-pathway genes associated with the increased lint yield observed in improved cultivars.
