Trimetallic nickel–iron–molybdenum oxides are good electrocatalysts despite severe molybdenum dissolution. Here, it is found that molybdenum induces the formation of nickel vacancies and distorts octahedral nickel sites, which induces the formation and stabilization of active nickel oxyhydroxides.
