NiO electrochromic devices degrade under high voltage due to strengthened metal–oxygen bonding and metastable phase accumulation. Here, authors tune covalency via Mo doping to enable regenerable heterojunctions, achieving over 17,000 cycles with high optical contrast and efficiency.
