  • Environmental impacts of water use affect the sustainability of food production. The impacts of water use associated with self-selected diets in the United States are estimated here based on the types and quantities of foods in the diet, the irrigation water required to produce those foods and the relative scarcity of water in the regions where that irrigation occurs. Food substitutions offer opportunities to reduce these water impacts.

  • T cell receptor (TCR)-based immunotherapeutic approaches have so far had limited success because of a lack of specific immune recognition and activation by the TCR. Here Nathaniel Liddy and his colleagues describe the generation, optimization and characterization of a new set of reagents—immune-mobilizing monoclonal TCRs against cancer (or ImmTACs)—designed to overcome some of these limitations. The ImmTACs were used to redirect and activate T cells to lyse tumor cells both in vitro and in vivo, even those expressing very low epitope numbers on the cell surface.

  • In HIV research, new types of reagents are needed to target infected cells and overcome HIV's ability to vary its HLA-I-restricted antigens and escape from host cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Here Varela-Rohena and colleagues use phage display technology to generate high-affinity T-cell antigen receptors that recognize common epitope-escape variants of the immunodominant HLA-A*02-restricted, HIVgag-specific peptide SLYNTVATL (SL9).
