Retinoic acid is thought to initiate meiosis in the fetal ovary via Stra8 expression, and Cyp26b1 metabolism of retinoic acid prevents meiosis in the testis. In this study, mice lacking retinoic acid synthesis exhibit Stra8 induction, suggesting that a Cyp26b1 substrate other than retinoic acid controls Stra8 expression.
