Mitochondrial H₂O₂ release does not directly cause damage to chromosomal DNA

Nuclear DNA damage downstream of mitochondrial ROS is often cited to contribute to cancer initiation and aging. However, here the authors show that although H₂O₂ induces DNA mutations when produced near DNA, it does not when released by mitochondria.

Somatostatin receptor 2 expression in nasopharyngeal cancer is induced by Epstein Barr virus infection: impact on prognosis, imaging and therapy

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) lacks effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, in particular at advanced stages. Here, the authors show that expression of the somatostatin receptor 2 is induced by Epstein-Barr virus in NPC and has a key role in the diagnosis, imaging, targeted therapies and prognosis of NPC.

SAMHD1 is a key regulator of the lineage-specific response of acute lymphoblastic leukaemias to nelarabine

Rothenburger et al. combine the analysis of data from large pharmacogenomics screens with cell line experiments to elucidate mechanisms behind nelarabine resistance in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). They identify low expression of the dNTP hydrolase SAMHD1 as a determinant of nelarabine sensitivity, suggesting the enzyme as a biomarker.
