Natural killer (NK) cells are critical innate immune effector cells but during chronic inflammatory contexts their function and fitness may become impaired. Here the authors implicate the cytokine IL-35 in the conversion of NK cells towards ILC1-like cells with features of tissue residency and impaired functionality.
